Liz,
Sadly...no. Yesterday, I was going to take a photo of the finches; it had been about a week since my last shot, so I wanted to document how much they had grown. When I held the camera up to the nest, they freaked--two of them flew out! One of them went really far...like across the street far...but another one landed in our yard. Before I could do anything, Reggie (who was at my feet the whole time) took off and pounced on it. It was dead in seconds (I guess kind of a good thing...at least it didn't suffer for long). I was (am) so sad! I am an accomplice to murder!

After the carnage, I noticed that there was only one finch left in the nest. The other two must have flown out earlier (they were all in there when I woke up). Who knows what happened to them...

The last one left must have been the runt of the group b/c he was really small and frail. He did NOT look ready for takeoff, but we left to run errands and, when we returned, he was gone too! I didn't see him or the others in any neighboring trees or bushes; my only hope is that the rest of them flew to safety...although I'm afraid Reggie probably got more than just that one. He seemed especially content (and fat) all day long.

The parents have been hanging around in the front yard. I keep hearing them chirp. They're saying "you killed our babies" over and over again...
